Similarly, the root of Mahakumbh (Kumbh Mela) belongs to the tale of searching for the “nectar of immortality” (Amrit Kalash) to end the war between the demons and the gods. Mythological, Lord Vishnu (residing on the ocean-bed, resting on Ananta – the great serpent) suggested the gods churn the ocean with the serpent Ananta as a rope to bring out the pot containing the nectar of immortality. Lord Vishnu asked the gods and the demons to churn the milky ocean together.

And whoever drank the nectar would be immortal and win the war. After so many favorable and unfavorable instances, Gods won the war, and Kumbh Mela is celebrated to pay gratitude to gods, spiritual powers, and purity.

That is the reason why countless devotees come to bathe in the holy river, the Ganges at the sacred heart, where the divinity centers.

Kumbh Mela Rotation

In every three years of duration, Kumbh Mela is organized by rotation in Haridwar, Allahabad, Nasik & Ujjain. Also, Ardha Kumbh Melas are held at Haridwar & Allahbad in every six years’ duration. This way, Maha Kumbh, in a particular city, is organized after 12 years.
